Tegelberg from Mühlberg
Tegelberg is Schwangau’s local mountain. Strictly speaking, it is not a single summit but a rugged mountain massif with several elevations. The highest point, the Branderschrofen, lies at 1,881 metres and clearly rises above the surrounding foothills of the Alps. From Mühlberg, this massif with its cable car is so close that it makes a calm, clearly defined excursion day.
If you start in the valley, you do not have to get up early or drive far. The valley station of the Tegelbergbahn is in Schwangau and can be reached from Mühlberg in a few minutes. That fits well with a stay where not every day has to be filled. If you like, you simply ride up, stop at the Tegelberghaus and take in the view; if you want to stay longer up there, you can choose between quiet routes around the mountain station and alpine tours to the Branderschrofen.

Cable car, routes and season
The Tegelbergbahn is an aerial tramway with two cabins that alternate between valley and mountain station. It overcomes an altitude difference of around 893 metres over a distance of just over two kilometres and has been in operation since 1966. Between 2019 and 2021, the valley and mountain stations were rebuilt and modernised; since spring 2021, new, largely glazed cabins have been in use, opening the view in all directions during the ride.
At the top, at around 1,720 metres, the actual network of routes begins. From the Tegelberghaus, which lies at 1,707 metres and is managed year-round, shorter routes are possible as well as the ascent to the Branderschrofen. The latter is alpine, exposed and not for insecure walkers; known ascents such as the Gelbe-Wand-Steig or the Schutzengelweg require sure-footedness and a head for heights. If you prefer it quieter, stay on the routes around the mountain station and take in the view and a stop for refreshments. In clear weather, the view reaches across the pre-Alpine lakes far into the Allgäu.
In summer, the cable car is the usual access. It is also a known starting point for paragliders and hang-gliders; launch and landing sites are directly linked to the cable car infrastructure, which makes Tegelberg an established flying area. In winter, if snow conditions allow, the mountain is also operated as a small ski area. At the valley station there is also a summer toboggan run, open in the warmer half-year in dry weather and especially interesting for families.
Practical notes for Mühlberg guests
For guests in Mühlberg, Tegelberg is a typical half-day excursion. Before setting off, it is worth checking the Tegelbergbahn website for current operating hours and maintenance periods, because the cable car runs with restrictions or pauses completely at certain times in spring and late autumn. Mountain weather should also be part of the planning, because at 1,720 metres clouds and wind can noticeably change a clear morning. Sturdy footwear and a warm layer in your backpack are sensible even in summer.
If the weather above is uncertain, the location is practical: you can decide at short notice whether it will be a mountain day or rather a walk at Alpsee. Both are close to Mühlberg, and neither option requires a long drive. That keeps Tegelberg a destination that fits well into a quiet stay without dominating it. If you want to combine the mountain day with a castle visit, you can do so without rush because Schwangau, Hohenschwangau and the valley station are in the same local area.
If you would like to combine mountain and castle, the articles on Neuschwanstein Castle, Hohenschwangau and the Surroundings overview fit well.
